The Plymouth Merchant Navy Monument target is to raise over £150,000 so as to be in a position to commission, build and erect a monument on Plymouth Hoe that can be dedicated in 2020 as a part of the Plymouth City’s “Mayflower 400” celebrations.

The Fund raising was launched during the 2015 “Seafarers Awareness Week”.
By the summer of 2018, the fund has raised over 80% of this target
the target time frame for erection of the Monument is during the summer of 2019
with the official unveiling planned for Merchant Navy Day, 3rd September, 2019
This will ensure that the Monument is in place, without disruption, for the Mayflower 400 ceremonies and events through 2020
A formal Dedication Ceremony is then planned for MN Day, 3rd September, 2020

On Seafarers' Awareness Day, June 25th 2015, the South West Company of Mariners presented a cheque to officially start the fund raising for a MN memorial on Plymouth Hoe.

The Plymouth Merchant Navy Monument Committee

As part of the celebration of Seafarers Awareness Week held in Plymouth University on the evening of 25th June 2015,
Vivien Foster, President of The Merchant Navy Association and committee chairman launched the fund raising campaign
in support of establishing a monument on Plymouth Hoe.
In her introduction to the project she drew attention to the committee’s mission statement that says
“Our aim is to commission a monument to be sited on Plymouth Hoe alongside those of the armed forces.
It will be dedicated to all those who serve in, or who have served in, the Merchant Navy or Fishing Fleet
in times of peace and war ensuring the survival of our island nation”.
It is intended that the monument will be in place for the Mayflower 400 commemoration in 2020.
With the assistance of Plymouth City Council a ‘Crowdfunding’ site will be operational in the near future for the receipt of donations.
The attached photograph is of Vivien Foster receiving a cheque for £1,000
